Blocks cut to sub-millimetre tolerance in one of the hardest stones there is, by a culture with no iron. One of the first archaeologists on site dated it to 15,000 BCE. He was wrong, and the story of why is more interesting than the number.

What is actually there
Puma Punku is a terraced platform, part of the larger Tiwanaku complex on the Bolivian Altiplano near Lake Titicaca, at an elevation of nearly 3,850 metres. Radiocarbon dating of material from the earliest construction fill places the start of building at roughly 536 to 600 CE. Tiwanaku itself, the city around it, grew to house perhaps 20,000 people at its height around 800 CE, before being abandoned some centuries before the Inca arrived and found it already in ruins.
What survives is fragmentary and heavily disturbed. The Spanish chronicler Pedro Cieza de León visited in the 1540s and described precision stonework he couldn't explain, even then. Since his visit the site has lost material to earthquakes, colonial-era quarrying for building stone and railway ballast, and target practice by the Bolivian military. Most of what you see today is not in its original position.
Two kinds of stone were used, from two different places. The largest blocks, including an 131-tonne red sandstone slab, came from a quarry roughly ten kilometres away. The more finely worked stone, including the famous H-blocks, is andesite, sourced from the Copacabana Peninsula on the far side of Lake Titicaca, around 90 kilometres distant, almost certainly moved at least part of the way by reed boat across the lake.
Nobody disputes that the H-blocks are precise. The argument is entirely about how.
The H-blocks are cut with deep, uniform channels, flat to within about a millimetre across their length, with sharp internal corners and almost no visible tool marks. In 2018 the archaeologist Alexei Vranich led a project that 3D-printed 140 andesite pieces and 17 sandstone slabs at scale, based on over a century of accumulated field measurements, and physically reassembled the structure on a tabletop. The result confirmed something the popular accounts get right: the blocks share a small set of standardised dimensions, repeated across pieces that were quarried and shaped weeks or months apart.
Unfinished blocks found at local quarries show the actual method: pounding with stone hammers to rough out the shape, then grinding and polishing with flat stones and sand. Bronze cramps, made from a copper-arsenic-nickel alloy, were used to lock finished blocks together, and channels for exactly this purpose survive in the stone. None of this requires metal tools capable of cutting andesite. It requires an enormous amount of skilled, patient labour, which is a different claim.
The sky here
This is where the site's most famous claim comes from, and it has nothing to do with the stones themselves.
In 1926, an Austrian engineer and self-taught archaeologist named Arthur Posnansky surveyed the nearby Kalasasaya enclosure, a rectangular platform lined with standing pillars whose name means, roughly, the standing stones. Posnansky measured the sightlines between the pillars and calculated the obliquity of the ecliptic they implied, the angle of Earth's axial tilt, which drifts slowly over a 41,000-year cycle. He arrived at a figure of 23 degrees, 8 minutes and 48 seconds, and worked backward to a construction date of roughly 15,000 BCE. In his later work he pushed the figure to 17,000 years, and argued Tiwanaku was the origin point of civilisation across the entire Americas.
The method itself is real astronomy. The problem is everything around it. Modern re-surveys found errors in Posnansky's original angle measurements. The Kalasasaya has been damaged and reconstructed more than once since the sixteenth century, which makes trusting its present-day alignment to arc-second precision a considerable stretch. No stratigraphic or artefactual evidence supports occupation at 15,000 BCE, and the Altiplano at that date, during the last glacial period, would have been a far harsher place to build a monumental solar observatory than it is now. Every datable object recovered from Tiwanaku is consistent with the first millennium CE.
What is easy to miss in the debunking is that Posnansky was not a crank operating alone. He spent decades on careful documentation of the site's architecture and sculpture, work still cited today, and his astronomical claim was reportedly checked by astronomers at German universities at the time. That combination, real fieldwork plus a genuinely wrong conclusion, is a large part of why the 15,000-year date still circulates.
Posnansky's number is wrong. I don't think that's seriously in question. But I keep coming back to the fact that he wasn't guessing. He picked a real astronomical phenomenon, one that genuinely does drift over tens of thousands of years, and built an entire chronology from it, confirmed by other trained astronomers of his era.
What if the mistake wasn't the method but the assumption underneath it, that the builders intended the alignment to be read with the same precision Posnansky brought to measuring it? A monument can be built to face sunrise on a particular festival day without its makers caring whether that sunrise sits at exactly 23 degrees 8 minutes rather than 23 degrees 27. We do this constantly: we build things approximately right and then later generations, us included, go looking for a precision that was never the point.

What tool sequence actually produced the H-block precision?
Hammering, grinding and polishing are documented and demonstrated at the local quarries. What isn't fully settled is how that sequence, done by hand, consistently produced flat channel floors and right-angle corners repeatable across dozens of blocks made months apart. Vranich's reconstruction confirms the standardisation is real. It doesn't fully explain the workshop process that achieved it.
How was the 131-tonne sandstone block actually moved?
The ten-kilometre haul from the quarry is short compared with some other megalithic transport problems, but it still means moving well over a hundred tonnes uphill, at over 3,800 metres elevation, without wheels or draft animals suited to the load. Sledges and log rollers are the leading proposal. None has been demonstrated at this exact scale on this terrain.
What was Puma Punku actually for?
Ceremonial platform, elite residence, a combination of both across different phases, the point where Andean creation myths locate the origin of humanity: all of these have support, and the site's destruction makes it hard to reconstruct a single confident floor plan, let alone a function.
Why did Posnansky's date outlive its evidence?
Covered above. I think this is a genuinely interesting question in its own right, separate from Tiwanaku's actual chronology: what makes a wrong number, once published with real credentials behind it, so much stickier than the correction that follows it.
