Privacy
Short version: if you declined the cookie notice, this site knows nothing about you at all.
What is collected
Only one thing, and only if you agreed to it: Google Analytics 4, which counts visitors and shows which pages get read. That is the entire extent of the measurement on this site.
If you accepted, Google Analytics places cookies on your device (named _ga and _gid) and records your approximate location, the pages you visit, how long you stay, which site sent you here, and your browser and device type. Your IP address is truncated before storage.
If you declined, none of that happens. The script is never loaded at all, no cookies are placed, and no data is sent anywhere. This is not a setting that quietly keeps tracking in the background.
Where the data goes
Google Analytics is operated by Google, and data is processed on servers including servers in the United States. Google is certified under the EU to US Data Privacy Framework, the adequacy arrangement adopted by the European Commission in July 2023, which is the legal basis for that transfer.
The legal basis for the processing itself is your consent, given through the notice at the bottom of the screen. Data linked to the analytics identifier is retained for a limited period and then deleted.
What this site does not do
- No advertising, no advertising networks, and no advertising cookies.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone.
- No profiling, no retargeting, no tracking you across other websites.
- No newsletter unless you type your address in yourself.
- No accounts, no logins, and no comment system that could store your details.
The site is a set of static files. It has no database and no server that could store anything about you even if it wanted to.
Links to other sites
The Library links out to sacred-texts.com, Project Gutenberg and the University of Oxford's ETCSL. The Discoveries pages link to journals and repositories. Once you click through, you are on their site and their privacy terms apply, not these.
Changing your mind
You can withdraw or give consent at any time, and it takes effect immediately.
You can also clear cookies for this site in your browser, which has the same effect. Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct and erase your data, and to complain to a supervisory authority. In the Netherlands that is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
