Hunter-gatherers raised ten-tonne carved pillars six thousand years before Stonehenge, and then filled the whole thing in.

What is actually there

A limestone ridge in south-eastern Türkiye, about fifteen kilometres from Şanlıurfa. Under it: a series of oval and circular enclosures, each ringed with T-shaped limestone pillars, with two larger pillars standing in the centre. The biggest are around five and a half metres tall and weigh in the region of ten tonnes.

The pillars are carved. Foxes, boars, snakes, cranes, scorpions, aurochs. Some have arms carved in relief down their sides and hands meeting at the front, with belts and loincloths. They are stylised human figures, not just posts.

Excavation began under Klaus Schmidt in 1995 and continues today. Geophysical survey suggests only a fraction of the site has been dug. Radiocarbon dates put the earliest enclosures in the tenth millennium BCE, which makes this roughly six thousand years older than Stonehenge and older than the Giza pyramids by about seven thousand years.

The people who built this had no pottery, no metal, no writing, and no agriculture.

That last point is the one that matters, and it is not a fringe claim. It is the mainstream finding. The animal bones recovered are overwhelmingly wild: gazelle, aurochs, boar. These were hunter-gatherers, and they organised labour on a scale that the textbooks had reserved for settled farming societies.

The sky here

At 37.22° N, the horizon here gives a solstice sunrise swing of roughly 58° to 122° azimuth. Several researchers have argued that specific enclosures are oriented to particular stars or to the solstice; the best-known version links Pillar 43, the so-called Vulture Stone, to the constellation figures and to a comet impact.

I want to be careful here. The alignments are measurable and the debate is real, but the interpretations range from cautious archaeoastronomy to claims that go well past what the stones can support. The enclosures were also rebuilt and modified over centuries, which complicates any single-date alignment argument considerably.

What is still open

Why was it buried?

The enclosures were deliberately backfilled with rubble, sediment and animal bone. Not abandoned. Filled in. Schmidt read this as ritual decommissioning. Others have argued for slope wash and natural infill over long periods, which would make it less intentional and less mysterious. The question is still live in the literature.

Did this cause farming, or follow it?

Schmidt's famous suggestion was that the temple came first: that the need to feed large gatherings of people drove the domestication of grain, rather than farming producing the surplus that allowed monuments. Genetic work on einkorn wheat placing its domestication nearby is often cited in support. It remains a hypothesis, and a genuinely exciting one.

Was it a temple at all?

Recent excavation has found evidence suggesting domestic activity: water cisterns, grinding stones, possible residential structures. Some archaeologists now argue Göbekli Tepe was a settlement with unusual communal architecture rather than a purely ritual site with nobody living there. The "world's first temple" framing may be too clean.

What does the Vulture Stone show?

Pillar 43 is densely carved: a vulture with a disc above its wing, a scorpion, birds, and a headless human figure. Readings run from a straightforward mortuary scene, to a star map, to a record of a specific catastrophic event. The carving is real and remarkable. The disagreement is entirely about what it means, and there is no way to settle it from the stone alone.

What is in the ninety per cent that has not been dug?

Ground-penetrating radar suggests many more enclosures remain buried. Nearby sites at Karahan Tepe and across the Taş Tepeler project are producing comparable finds. This is not a solved site. It is a site we have barely started.

What if

We assume the pillars are gods, or ancestors, or spirits, some category we already have a word for. But the T-shape is not quite a person and not quite an object. Arms, hands, a belt, and then nothing at all where a head should be.

What if the headlessness is the point? What if these are deliberately unfinished figures, representing something the carvers were explicitly not allowed to depict fully? I have no way to test that. It is just the thing I cannot stop noticing: eleven thousand years of people carving faces onto everything, and here, right at the start, somebody chose not to.

On Ancient Apocalypse

Göbekli Tepe features in the Netflix series as evidence that hunter-gatherers received knowledge from an earlier lost civilisation. The site does genuinely overturn old assumptions about what pre-agricultural societies could do. What it does not currently provide is any material trace of outside instruction: no foreign tools, no imported techniques, no unexplained technology. The tooling marks are consistent with flint working, and the sculpture has local precedents.

That distinction matters: "this rewrites what we thought hunter-gatherers could do" is well supported. "Therefore someone taught them" is a separate claim that needs its own evidence.
